In a conversation with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the strengthening of NATO’s deterrence and defense capabilities. On March 27, 2024, in Riga, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņš met with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, to discuss NATO deterrence and defense issues in preparation for the NATO Summit in Washington.

During the meeting, K. Kariņš expressed that Latvia’s priorities are investing in national defense capabilities and increasing NATO’s presence in our region. Active work is underway to strengthen NATO’s extended presence battle group, improve air defense and develop the Selia range. The conversation discussed the situation in Ukraine and emphasized the need to provide all kinds of support to Ukraine to ensure its victory in the war against Russia.

R. Bauer has held the position of Chairman of the NATO Military Committee since June 2021. From 2017 to 2021, he was the Commander-in-Chief of the Dutch Armed Forces, as a ship captain he participated in several anti-terrorist operations in the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.
