An exhibition is opened in the NATO Saeima for Latvia’s 20th anniversary / Article

Latvia’s path to NATO membership began immediately after the restoration of independence – first as a political and diplomatic process. It was important to convince colleagues from Western countries that we are not only dreaming, but also capable of implementing political and military changes at the national level, including reforming and developing the country’s armed forces and making them modern, strong and reliable. The role of the Parliament was decisive in this way. What Latvia’s path to NATO was like can be seen in the photo exhibition in the Saeima.

“The biggest thanks goes to our society, which gave us this mandate to achieve this goal,” said Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševiča, member of the Speaker of the Saeima (“New Unity”).

The Chairman of the Saeima Defense Commission, Raimonds Bergmanis (“Joint List”) expressed the hope that “we will never be alone again, because we are in the strongest political-military alliance”.

The Latvian National Armed Forces take part in military exercises side by side with our allies, fulfill tasks in international missions and jointly take care of the security of the entire alliance. Canada was the first country to ratify Latvia’s membership in NATO.

“The decision made is correct, and it has very visible and tangible results, both for Latvia’s common security and in the context of the current situation,” said Brian Svorks, Canada’s ambassador to Latvia.

The exhibition “Latvija NATO: Parliamentary Path” collects both Latvia’s first steps on the way to NATO, documented in the era of analog photography, as well as photo moments from the events of recent years, which illustrate both Latvia’s role in the world’s strongest military alliance and the solidarity of our allies.
