For the floor covering in the greenhouse, if the plants are grown in pots or bags, it is most convenient to use geotextiles designed for soil stabilization, separation and filtration. It varies in thickness, density, load resistance and application in different places. There are two types – woven and non-woven geotextile. The first one is produced by weaving the threads at a right angle – like the fabrics we are used to, so that the structure of the material is organized.
The non-woven geotextile is made from a continuous polypropylene thread by thermal pressing.
Non-woven geotextile with a density of 100 g/m2 is used more in horticulture. It allows both moisture and air to pass through and suppresses weed growth well. It can last up to 10 years. Geotextiles are used not only for the floor of greenhouses, but also in perennial plantations for the cultivation of strawberries, blueberries, grapes, for strengthening pond edges and in nurseries. The boxes marked on the material help to plant the plants at the desired distances without using a tape measure.
A cheaper material can also be used for the floor of the greenhouse – black agronet with a density of 50 or 80 g/m2, but it usually lasts only one or two years.
Geotextile is available in black, brown, white and dark green. Green and brown have more of an aesthetic meaning. The most popular is the black geotextile, which warms up better in the spring, thus the ground under it and the air in the greenhouse. On the other hand, white geotextile is more suitable in summer. Therefore, in general evaluation, the advantage in the choice should be given to white.
Geotextile materials are sold in rolls of different widths, from one to five meters, so it can be easily laid in greenhouses of different sizes. Before applying it, the soil in the greenhouse must be leveled. The material is laid on the ground and fixed with special plastic pins.
