Andrejs Īkis has directed the feature films “Class Reunion 2” 2020), “Class Reunion” (2019), “Blēži” (2018), “Swingeri” (2016). 2007), “Baiga vasara (2000)), in which the action takes place in the decisive moments in the history of Latvia. The director’s latest work has recently reached the audience – the multi-part historical drama “Dumpis”. Its plot is based on historical events – in 1975.

In the conversation, Ekis tells why he calls his filming group both a gang and a symphony orchestra, and also reveals several of his working methods.

“Every person loves himself the most in the world. I used to teach journalists on television how to get information, true information, out of the “patient” the fastest, the most. You tattoo the letter “G” on one arm. It means to flatter. You have to tell a person something good that you like about them, and on the other hand – “K”. It means “to listen”. You must be able to listen with great interest. And then everything will happen.”

Andrejs Īkis: “Juri Poškus and I had many different collaborations in the late eighties and early nineties. Here we are in Denmark. The Danish government had allocated money for the youth of the Soviet Union to go to Denmark. Denmark opened the doors of its film schools, we were able to take some wants technique and to film everything in turn. It was a time of great permission, ideas, opportunities, like when you have been kept in a barrel for a long time and now the lid of the barrel opens.”

“It’s in Moscow, it was also very interesting there. I don’t remember what movie we wanted to shoot in Red Square, but Poškus and I had come to explore Red Square and we saw this furry animal in one corner.”

“Mission in Kabul”, 1989.
Director: Andrejs Īkis
Role: Juris Poškus
We had invented such a style “laconicism”. It was an “art for art’s sake” movie that had nothing to do with reality.
