On Monday, May 13, Minister of Defense Andris Spruds will receive the Commander of the Canadian Armed Forces, General Wayne Eyre (Wayne D. Eyre).

During the meeting, issues of regional security, increasing the battle group of the Canadian-led NATO expanded presence in Latvia from battalion to brigade level, as well as support for Ukraine will be discussed.

It has already been reported that last year Latvia and Canada signed a road map at the Ādažu base, marking what has already been achieved, as well as determining the next steps for increasing the battle group of the Canadian-led NATO expanded presence in Latvia from battalion to brigade level. It is planned that the brigade will reach its full combat readiness by 2026.

Currently, the creation of the headquarters of the allied brigade-level unit in the Mārupe region, at the military base “Ceri”, has been started, where approximately 700 allied soldiers, as well as allied military equipment and equipment, will be deployed. This project is co-financed by Canada.

Also, Canada has delivered 15 “Leopard 2” tanks with supporting personnel to Latvia, strengthening the allied presence in the Baltic region and supplementing the military capabilities to develop the battle group of NATO’s extended presence in Latvia to the brigade level.

Canada is a close ally of Latvia, and both countries share a common view of democracy, security and military cooperation. Canada was one of the first NATO countries to ratify Latvia’s entry into the Alliance in 2004.
