Before Xi Jinping’s arrival in Hungary, Magyar Nemzet, a newspaper loyal to the Orbán government, published an opinion piece by the leader of Communist China, in which he praised the long-standing friendship between China and Hungary, which is said to be as mature and rich as the famous wines of Hungary’s Tokaj region.
During Xi Jinping’s visit, China and Hungary will sign 16 bilateral cooperation agreements, mainly related to Beijing’s economic interests in Hungary. Beijing plans to invest billions in infrastructure and energy projects. The Chinese also plan to build electric car and battery factories in Hungary.
Experts pointed out that China sees friendly Hungary as its gateway to the EU’s single market.
On the other hand, Orbán’s critics believe that Hungary’s close economic and financial ties with China can threaten the country’s security.
