In 2015, the Labor government led by Muscat concluded an agreement with Vitals Global Healthcare for the reconstruction and management of three state-owned hospitals. However, Malta’s audit authority later revealed that the government did not conduct an in-depth review of Vitals Global Healthcare before concluding the deal, handing over the management of the hospitals to a company with no prior experience in healthcare.
Last year, a Maltese court annulled the privatization deal after opposition parties filed a request to review it.
Muscat called the accusations against him “fantasy and lies” and claimed that he was the victim of political revenge.
Several other former and current government officials have been indicted in the case, including Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearn, who the Maltese government was preparing to nominate for the post of European Union commissioner.
