Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is ready to carry out a small military operation against one of the NATO countries to test the reaction of the West, the head of Poland’s military counter-intelligence service, Jaroslav Stroczyk, has warned.

He suggests that the Russian despot could annex the territories of Estonia or Sweden, which could be part of a wider plan to take over the Baltic states if Ukraine loses the war, writes The Sun.
Strozhik said that all predictions about Russia’s readiness for a potential attack on NATO countries are based only on some assumptions made by agencies without complete information.
But the intelligence official admitted that the Kremlin leader is capable of planning a small-scale invasion.
He told the Polish edition “Dziennik Gazeta Pravna”: “Putin is definitely already ready for some mini-operation against one of the Baltic states, for example entering the famous Narva [pašvaldība Igaunijā] or land on one of the Swedish islands.”
He added that, despite Putin’s goals, the West’s common stance is currently hindering his progress: “What the West is doing together to support Ukraine shows him that in the event of an attack, NATO’s Western response would be even stronger.”
Several NATO members in Europe have warned the public about the possibility of Russia’s impending aggression. In December 2023, the newspaper Bild, citing its intelligence sources in a European country, reported that Russia may try to attack Europe in late 2024 or early 2025, when the US will be left “without a leader”.
Commenting on the statement of the head of the Polish military counter-intelligence service, Oleksandr Musienko, head of the Center for Military and Legal Research, told Radio NV: “The idea that Russia could attack the Baltic states only after it had succeeded in occupying Ukraine and winning is, of course, correct. But it is flawed to some extent in the sense that it should not be underestimated that if Russia sees itself headed for total defeat in Ukraine (and they are already at least unable to achieve a strategic victory), <...> it means that they can attack the Baltic states to implement a campaign called de-escalation through escalation.”
The expert also stated that he sees a threat not only to Estonia or Sweden, as mentioned by the head of Polish counterintelligence, but also to Lithuania from the side of Belarus: “I think that the plan that Russia considered together with Belarus, namely to break the border between Belarus and Lithuania and try to move Iskanders with nuclear warheads there and create an extremely serious challenge, even bigger than the Cuban Missile Crisis of the 1960s.”
