India’s Central Bureau of Investigation said at least 35 Indians have been duped in this way.

Relatives of two Indians who died in the war in Ukraine told the news agency “Reuters” that the men went to Russia hoping to work in the army as “helpers”, but they were sent to the front.

Authorities in India’s neighbor Sri Lanka said on Wednesday that a group of retired army officers had been lured to fight in Ukraine as part of Russian forces by promises of good pay, Russian citizenship and other benefits, but none of the promises were fulfilled.

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defense claimed that a large number of Sri Lankans were killed or injured in Ukraine, but did not give a specific number.

Earlier, Nepal also announced that hundreds of its citizens had been recruited to fight in Ukraine. According to the government, at least 200 Nepalis are serving as part of Russian troops in Ukraine, while around 100 are believed to be missing.
