The rector of the Estonian Business School names the direction in which Latvian universities should also think

--

We need other people, and universities really need to get serious about this. For example, when I studied at the University of Tartu in the early 90s, I would say that a very valuable element for me was simply going to Tartu and spending time in the cafe of the University of Tartu library, because there you could meet all kinds of people, talk to them. I still know these people, and that’s how you build your network. Therefore, studies were important not only with what the professor told you in the lectures, but also with whom you were with in the lectures, with whom you met before or after them. It was the creation of a real social network, not the kind of social network that various platforms such as Facebook now offer. Thus, a social network created becomes social capital, and universities should promote it. However, this also requires certain changes to take place in universities. For example, when you go to large universities, you often see that they have auditoriums with built-in furniture. At IBS, all our rooms are multifunctional. You can remove the chairs and dance there if you want. You have to think about that too. If you have single-purpose rooms, it makes you lecture because you can’t even move the chairs, right? Hence, interactive learning is a conceptual decision, but it also makes you think very practically. So that I don’t walk into a room and think, what can I do here, it’s clear that I can only do one thing – I can give a lecture.
