The group’s statement said that its top leader, Ismail Haniya, told the Qatari prime minister and Egypt’s intelligence minister about the acceptance of the proposal in a telephone conversation. The two Middle Eastern countries have been acting as mediators in the talks between Israel and Hamas for months.
The announcement came hours after Israel ordered Palestinians to begin evacuating the southern Gaza city of Rafah ahead of an Israeli military operation. Israel says that Rafah is the last bastion of “Hamas”.
Details of the proposal were not released. But in recent days, Egyptian and Hamas officials have announced that the truce will be reached in several stages, in which Hamas will release hostages in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip.
