Stoltenberg pointed out that Ukraine has been forced to use ammunition rationally and sparingly for months. “But it is not too late for Ukraine to gain the upper hand,” the NATO Secretary General emphasized at a joint press conference with Zelensky.

Stoltenberg acknowledged that the long delay in US military aid had “serious consequences on the battlefield” but stressed that help was on the way. “Our allies are considering what else can be done, and I expect new announcements soon. That’s why we are working hard to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs,” he promised.

Zelensky also urged allies to speed up supplies to bolster the front line. “The Russian army is trying to take advantage of the situation while we are waiting for supplies from our partner. (..) So the promptness of supplies literally means stabilization of the front line,” he added.

“We must work together to stop the Russian attack,” the president added.

Speaking about the long-awaited aid, Zelensky said “some things have started to arrive” but declined to “go into details”.

US President Joe Biden last week gave final approval to the aid, which had been blocked by Congress for months, and promised that shipments would begin immediately.

On Sunday, Ukraine announced that the situation in eastern Donetsk region was deteriorating.
