Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, but after reforms in 1999 it has its own parliament and also a government that decides on Scottish policy issues.

The SNP’s coalition with the Green Party fell apart as Youssef’s government decided to abandon its ambitious climate policy plans.

Yusef has decided to resign himself, without waiting for a vote of no confidence in the parliament.

Yusef served as Scottish Prime Minister for a little over a year.

The post of Scottish Premier and SNP leader became vacant in February 2023 when long-time SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon resigned.

Recently, the SNP has been weakened by the party’s financial scandal and disagreements over transgender rights.

Youssef, 39, was the first Muslim to head the Scottish government and also a British party.

Yusef was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. His father immigrated to Britain from Pakistan, while his mother was born in Kenya.
