“I think (..) that Ukraine cannot be helped gradually, you know, a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Do we want Ukraine to win? Do we want it to lose?” said Wallace.
He expressed his understanding of the German chancellor’s concerns that the conflict could escalate, but stressed that they were unfounded.
Scholz claimed that “Taurus” could be used responsibly only with the participation of German soldiers both in Ukraine and outside, but this is a line that he does not want to cross.
“Throughout this whole process, we’ve seen that Russia’s red lines are like chalk, they’re just being wiped off the board,” Wallace said.
“Ukraine will follow all the restrictions you set. So you could give them the Taurus. And you could add all sorts of restrictions on what you want, where they would or wouldn’t be used,” Wallace pointed out.
The former British defense minister welcomed Germany’s efforts to increase aid to Ukraine, but criticized Scholz. According to him, Scholz is not a leader for the current conflict conditions, and he does not understand the principle of threat deterrence.
“He doesn’t understand deterrence, he doesn’t seem to understand that (…) in relations with Russia, to appear either indecisive, or to be inconsistent on certain decisions, or to give the impression that you are not in step with allies, is to help Putin,” Wallace said.
