During their life together, the two always left the impression of a harmonious couple, so Ieva’s announcement about the end of the marriage came as a surprise to many.

“We did not find the motivation to solve our problems that we have known for years. Maybe the work in Ukraine also demanded huge resources from me, and I could not find time for everyone to make everyone feel happy. Maybe that was the last straw? Obviously, this is just my version, and there is definitely another version out there.

But it is clear that during these years I did not get myself a real marriage partner. I feel like I married the president, and Thomas remained the president for the rest of his life in that marriage. It’s a title for life, of course, but it’s important for me to have a partner in my life. I missed it for many years. We have talked about it a lot,” Ieva tells the publication.

“I have been characterized by defiance and insane endurance over the years and I have held back very much, so the facade looked pretty good from the outside and this announcement in December may have come as a shock to some. It certainly wasn’t a shock to me. And that was Thomas’ choice, it wasn’t mine. I had determination, endurance and faith that I can do it to the end and that a solution is possible if people try. But Thomas at some point decided not to. Thomas felt that he had other options, and he needed the freedom to use those other options.

In this last year, many things happened that were not morally acceptable to me. At some point I realized that it was not really fair to me. And I was the one who went to court because we did not find a common understanding of the situation. The marriage has not yet been dissolved, it is going quite hard at the moment, and some issues will have to be resolved in court,” says Ieva.

She admits: “I feel sorry for myself, and I know that the beginning was like a fairy tale. But everyone has limits.”

The couple has a common offspring – a seven-year-old son, Hans. And Ieva points out that she and her ex-husband have no arguments or different opinions regarding the child. “But I can say that Thomas spends very little time with the child,” said Ieva.

Ieva does not regret her marriage with the President of Estonia, but after the divorce she feels a certain relief that she will finally be able to build an independent professional career, because during the marriage “people only saw me as Tomas’s wife”. “I’m not complaining, because I’ve also gained a lot from it. But it had many side effects,” says Ieva.

At the same time, Ieva admits that divorce is not the end of the world, and while living in Ukraine, she has realized that the most important thing is a person’s life, health and future opportunities.
