There’s no denying that the divorce announcement in December was unexpected. Ilvesa announced the divorce through the website “Facebook”.
What really happened? “It’s not easy to talk about it, and a lot of things don’t want to be discussed publicly. We didn’t find the motivation to solve our problems that we’ve known for years. Maybe the work in Ukraine also required huge resources from me, and I couldn’t find time for everyone to make everyone feel happy. Maybe it was the last drop?Obviously this is just my version and there must be another version.
But it is clear that during these years I did not get myself a real marriage partner.
I feel like I married the president, and Thomas remained the president for the rest of his life in that marriage. Of course, this is a title for life, but it is important for me to have a partner in my life. I missed it for many years. We have talked about it a lot.
I’ve been stubborn and insanely tenacious over the years, and I’ve held back a lot, so the facade looked pretty good from the outside, and this December announcement may have come as a shock to some. It certainly wasn’t a shock to me. And that was Thomas’ choice, it wasn’t mine. I had determination, endurance and faith that I can do it to the end and that a solution is possible if people try. But Thomas at some point decided not to. Thomas felt that he had other options, and he needed the freedom to use those other options. In this last year, many things happened that were not morally acceptable to me. At some point I realized that it wasn’t really fair to me. And I was the one who went to court because we did not find a common understanding of the situation.
The marriage is not divorced yet, it is going quite hard at the moment, and some issues will have to be resolved in court. I hope there is a fair trial in a democratic society.
I feel sorry for myself, and I know that the beginning was like a fairy tale. But everyone has limits.”
It has already been reported that shortly after the divorce, Ilves gave an interview to the newspaper “Eesti Express”, in which he shared his thoughts on the recent event.
We remind you that Ieva and Tomas Ilvesi exchanged rings on January 2, 2016 in Estonia. Ilvesa has three children, the youngest of them – Hans Hendriks – was born in November 2016.
