You are driving on a winding country road. It is impossible to see beyond what is around the bend. Suddenly, your Volvo warns you: there’s an accident ahead. Calmly slowing down and rounding the next bend, you see a crash in your lane. Thanks to the warning, you were prepared and able to react proactively.

With the new Accident Ahead Alert system, Volvo Cars introduces another innovative connected safety feature: for the first time, cars can warn drivers about accidents using real-time data from the traffic control center. It will be available on compatible Volvo cars in Europe.

To help drivers avoid collisions and traffic jams caused by an accident ahead, this feature is designed to immediately warn the driver of a road accident even a few hundred meters ahead.
Location data is provided by national road authorities and compatible cars starting with for Volvo cars.

According to the manufacturer – Using their revolutionary connected safety technology, Crash Alert can help Volvo drivers avoid unpleasant surprises while helping to make the roads safer for everyone. Thanks to the collaboration with the Danish Road Directorate and other partners in the Data for Road Safety ecosystem, Volvo can introduce this new feature and continue its leading role in safety innovation.

The first connected security technology

Volvo Cars’ industry-first connected safety technology, introduced in 2016, uses the Volvo Cars cloud based on real-time data. This allows Volvo cars to communicate with each other and alert drivers to nearby slippery road conditions and hazards. In the same way, drivers can now be alerted to accidents, regardless of the time of day.

Looking ahead, Volvo has plans to integrate more traffic data shared by other partners in the European Data for Traffic Safety ecosystem, including national traffic control centers in other countries and cars from other brands.

To make roads safer for all, more road managers are being encouraged to share anonymous crash data and encourage other car manufacturers to join in by offering similar technology. Needless to say, Volvo Cars is committed to sharing connected safety data so others can integrate safety features and will continue to do so.

Volvo representatives say that Volvo Cars is the first car manufacturer to start using the new data flow of real-time traffic events. The quick warning of an accident ahead gives the driver more time to reduce speed and increase the distance to the car in front. This helps reduce the risk of future collisions and protect people working to clear the road.

Still thinking – should I become a Volvo owner?

It’s easy for Volvo car owners to contribute to road safety by opting for data sharing: simply activate it via the ‘connected safety’ option in the car’s central display. The car will then be able to alert the driver of the incident using the hazard warning light on the dashboard and, if available, a forward-facing display. Rest assured that only essential information will be shared with other cars and the data will be anonymized to ensure your privacy.

The Accident Ahead Alert function is currently available in Denmark for all 90s (e.g. Volvo xc90), 60s (even used Volvo xc 60) and 40 series (eg Volvo v40) for Volvo car models from 2016 onwards. It will soon be available for the same car models in several European markets.
