PSG vs Dortmund score, result, stats as Hummels header means more Mbappe heartbreak in UEFA Champions League

Borussia Dortmund pulled off a defensive masterclass to reach the 2024 UEFA Champions League final as they overcame Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on aggregate.

Eden Terzic’s side defied all odds as they returned to the final 11 years on from their devastating Klassiker defeat at Wembley in 2013.

The German side entered the Parc des Princes with a one-goal advantage from the first leg but doubled that five minutes into the second half after Julian Brandt picked out Mats Hummels at the far post from a corner. The German centre-back rose highest, unmarked, and headed the ball into the ground, which beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

After a cautious first half with few goalscoring opportunities for either team, PSG almost took the lead when Warren Zaire-Emery’s strike rattled the post. But that near miss proved costly as, moments later, Hummels capitalized from the corner kick to extend their lead.

Nuno Mendes then came close for PSG on the hour mark as they desperately searched for an equaliser, the Portuguese left-back striking the post with a terrific strike from outside the box.

PSG then thought they’d been awarded a penalty after the referee pointed to the spot when Ousmane Dembele was brought down on the right side of the box. Daniele Orsato, the on-field official, then changed his mind seconds later as he deemed Dembele to have been fouled outside the box and replays showed he was spot on.

Kylian Mbappe was much more involved tonight than at Signal Iduna Park and it was then his turn to hit the bar with five minutes to play after being teed up on the penalty spot.

Luis Enrique’s side then turned to try their luck from distance and it almost worked for Vitinha. The 24-year-old smashed the woodwork as he sweetly hit the ball from some distance but slammed the bar. It was the sixth time they were denied by the frame of the goal over the two legs and the fourth in the second 90 minutes.

Despite PSG’s constant pressure on Dortmund’s goal as time ran out, they never truly appeared close to breaching BVB’s commendable defense. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made crucial saves that frustrated Mbappe and company as Terzic’s men booked their ticket to London.

FT: DORTMUND HAVE DONE IT! They’re back in the Champions League final for the first time since 2013. PSG have yet again missed out and it looks as though Kylian Mbappe will finish his Parisian career without a European trophy to his name.

90th minute: Five minutes added on!

88th minute: OFF THE BAR AGAIN! Mbappe’s free on the penalty spot and Kobel tips his strike onto the bar and clear. PSG then hit it again through Vitinha as his superb effort from outside the box beats Kobel but is once again denied by the frame of the goal!

86th minute: PSG are seriously running out of time here and they don’t appear to be launching balls into the box just yet.

84th minute: Hakimi receives a yellow for trying too desperately to get the ball back from Schlotterbeck.

80th minute: Mbappe’s clever run sees him in the box and takes his shot early, but Kobel turns it around the post for a corner.

79th minute: This has been a spectacular defensive performance from Dortmund as they’ve never looked uncomfortable, despite the constant pressure from PSG.

76th minute: GOAL! But it’s offside for Dortmund and it won’t count as Hummels is a good five or so yards in an offside position.

72nd minute: PSG have less than 20 minutes to find two goals if they’re to reach the final!

70th minute: Hummels puts his body on the line as he takes a Nuno Mendes cross to the face and uses the head injury to wind down the clock.

65th minute: PENALTY? From penalty. Dembele is brought down inches outside the box and originally the referee had pointed to the spot but changed his mind moments later.

62nd minute: Nuno Mendes strikes the post! Kobel could only watch as his effort came so close to leveling the score for PSG. They’ve now hit the woodwork four times across the two legs! Is it just not their time?

60th minute: What a chance for PSG. Ramos is open on the penalty spot and hooks an effort over the bar.

57th minute: PSG look lost for inspiration. Dortmund are finding space and look the more likely to go and find the back of the net again.

50th minute: GOAL!!! DORTMUND DOUBLE THEIR ADVANTAGE. Hummels is left unmarked from the corner at the far post and he perfectly guides his header into the bottom right corner.

48th minute: Mbappe’s cross finds Ramos but he can only get a toe on it and it makes its way to the back post and somehow Zaire-Emery hits the post from three yards out! He really should have scored from there.

46th minute: The second half is a go! Let’s see who will reach the Champions League final…

39th minute: Mbappe again involved as he dribbles down the left flank but his cross is too close to Kobel who collects with ease.

35th minute: What a spell of attacking play from both sides that was! Mbappe tries to swipe an effort goalwards but can’t test Kobel. Adeyemi then breaks at pace and takes it onto his left foot and forces Donnarumma into a superb save.

31st minute: A brilliant move by Mbappe takes three defenders out of the game and the ball makes its way to Dembele on the right who slices a strike high over the bar.

25th minute: The heat has slightly been taken out of the game after a blistering start.

16th minute: Edin Terzic’s side have somewhat gotten control of this game now and look composed in their play.

8th minute: Dortmund have started to get their foot on the ball and the home side are gifting them cheap free-kicks as they’re desperate to keep the intensity up.

5th minute: It’s been exactly the start we expected from PSG as they’ve tested Dortmund’s defense a couple of times in these early stages.

Luis Enrique’s hosts have sealed the Ligue 1 title, but they can remain on course for a trophy treble this season, if they get past Dortmund.

The former Barcelona boss will be forced into one change, with Lucas Hernandez suffering a season-ending knee injury in the first leg, with Danilo Pereira or Lucas Beraldo set to replace him.
