Larry Nasser, the former doctor of the US gymnastics team, has been sentenced to 175 years in prison, or until the end of his life. He once sexually abused hundreds of athletes, including underage girls.

139 women accused the FBI of negligence in investigating Nasser’s crimes. Due to mistakes made by office staff, the abuser was able to continue working as a doctor for another year after the first accusations, putting new potential victims at risk.

“While this compensation will not undo the harm Nasser has caused, we hope it will help provide the victims of his crimes with the essential support they need to continue to heal,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

ESPN reports that various institutions have paid out a total of about one billion dollars in compensation to help recover the hundreds of women who became victims of Nasser’s sexual abuse.

Michigan State University, which was one of Nasser’s workplaces, paid out about $500 million to more than 300 women and girls who were victimized.

The USA Gymnastics Federation, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee paid about $380 million in compensation to Nasser’s victims.

For 18 years, Nasser served as the USA Gymnastics team doctor. He sexually abused hundreds of girls and women under the guise of medical care. The victims blindly obeyed the abuser, dreaming of participating in the Olympic Games.

The first complaints about Nasser’s crimes were filed already in the 1990s, but the notorious sports doctor was able to skillfully manipulate young girls and women, so he managed to escape punishment for years.
