In the first match of the tournament, Ostapenko defeated the neutral player Anastasia Potapova in two sets 6-4, 6-2. Alona is seeded 9th in the tournament, so she entered the fight immediately in the second round.

As of mid-May, Ostapenko is ranked 10th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, while Potapova is ranked 43rd.

Structure of WTA Tour tournaments

  1. “Grand Slam” tournaments (4)
  2. 1000 point tournaments (10) incl.
  • Mandatory (4) Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Beijing
  • Optional (6) Doha, Dubai, Rome, Toronto/Montreal, Cincinnati, Wuhan

4. 250 point tournaments (23)

Alona will meet the Spaniard Sara Soribes-Tormo (WTA 47) in the next round in the fight for a place in the round of 16.

Ostapenko reached the semifinals in Rome last year, so she needs to defend a lot of ranking points to reduce the risk of losing positions in the world rankings.

Alona will also compete in the doubles matches with her usual opponent Ludmila Kichenoka from Ukraine, where both are seeded sixth.

The tournament in Rome will last until May 19, with men and women sharing a prize fund of 4.79 million euros on clay courts. The winner of the women’s singles will earn 1,000 ranking points.

In the season’s second “Grand Slam” tournament – the French Open Championship – the first matches in the main tournament will take place on May 26.
