Sonora Liepa from Jelgava won silver in the European junior ranking tournament in squash

Jelgava Technological High School student Sonora Liepa won a silver medal in the senior – GU19 – group of the European Squash Federation (ESF) rating tournament “Latvian Junior Open 2024”. In the final match, Sonora lost to the Czech Ella Pelikanova in three games, but with a small difference of points.

Although Sonora is only 16 years old, due to insufficient number of participants in the GU17 group, she had to compete in the senior group. The opponents were relatively equal, also in the ESF ranking, both are next to each other – Sonora takes 27th place, Ella – 26th – but health problems prevented Sonora from showing her best possible performance – the Jelgav player did not fully recover after a long illness.

Four players of the Jelgava Squash Club competed in “Latvian Junior Open 2024”. “The performance of Jelgava 5th secondary school student Eva Belozuba should be praised. In her debut tournament, she won 4th place in the GU15 group, beating the players from Lithuania and Finland, but losing to the Maltese and the winner of the tournament from Poland,” said Baiba Lulle, head of the Jelgava Squash Club.

The boys had strong opponents. An intense battle for the 7th place took place between the student of the Jelgava Spidol State Gymnasium Rafael Hairapetian and the Lithuanian Vili Blumberga – the game of both went like waves, winning one, then the other, until everything was decided in a fierce fifth game, at the end of which luck was on the side of the Lithuanian. In the same group, 10th place in the competition of 11 boys as well for a Polish to Emil Goož.

65 players from different European countries took part in the competition. A total of 16 young squash players competed from Latvia – Riga, Jelgava and Pļavinias.

“Latvian Junior Open 2024” was held from April 26 to 28 at the “Pepsi” squash center in Riga.
