Answering the questioning questions of the presenter: it would not be necessary to call the GULAG camp, according to the official version, correctional-labor, similar to Salaspils, Mr. Zunda emphasized the “very hypertrophied, inflated number of casualties” in the Latvian camp. There was no way it could be 100 thousand! Interestingly, Mr. Zunda listed several stages of the functioning of Salaspils, but he did not say that Soviet prisoners of war died en masse there, or that minor prisoners were held there.
“Salaspils cannot be compared in any way to Auschwitz,” the president’s advisor decidedly declared. “These people were not brought there to be killed in gas chambers and burned in a crematorium.” Therefore, to name Salaspils as a camp of death — “neobъektivno”. And in general, according to Antoniysu Zunde, “in Latvia there is no censorship, there is no order”…
Regarding the order, Mr. Zunda flirts – if it wasn’t there, then large sums would not have been allocated to his commission’s “investigations” and their subsequent circulation. As you know, the idea of ”explaining the complex history of Latvia to the world” was recently raised by the Diet (as if it is “simple” in other countries of the world!). And here is another historian by specialty, the ambassador of Latvia to Israel, Karlis Eichenbaums, the other day, he said in the local Russian-language newspaper “Novosti nedeli” that the Jewish community of Latvia was “prosperous”, but “soviet time all this was crossed out”.
He didn’t explain in words what made Latvia a “judenfray”, Mr. Eichenbaums said that “a lot of young Latvians in the war years were forcibly driven into the SS army divisions”. And now “they don’t celebrate, they remember the fallen”. Yes, and in general, Mr. Eichenbaums showed himself as a big democrat: “I admire the hard work of Russian-speaking repatriates who master this land with extraordinary determination, while protecting their self-respect and self-image”.
