The sailing ship “Belem” slowly and majestically enters the port of Piraeus, which is located near the Greek capital Athens. Along the waterfront, it is awaited by a respectable crowd of spectators who have gathered to see the historic ship that will carry the ceremonial flame of the Olympic Games from Greece to France, the host country of this year’s summer games.

In the port, it must be said, there really is a feeling of celebration! This is helped by the brass band, with solemn melodies, and the flags of Greece and France flying on the mast, which symbolize the unity and friendship of the two nations. And, of course, the high spirits of those gathered.

The Olympic flame, which is the central element of this gathering, started its journey from the ruins of the Olympia Stadium to Paris already on April 16, when the first of more than 10 thousand torch bearers started this relay.

It should be noted that the sea transport with which the torch will now continue its journey was not chosen by chance – this ship was built in 1896 – the same year when the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens.

The sailing ship Belem is scheduled to leave the port of Piraeus already this Saturday, April 27, but a day before that, a solemn ceremony will take place, during which the torch with the Olympic flame will be handed over to the next participants of this relay to continue their journey to France.
