In the second reading, the Saeima supported stricter restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages, while rejecting the ban on buying alcohol under the age of 20 previously supported by the Saeima commission. True, in order for the amendments to the Law on the Circulation of Alcoholic Beverages to enter into force, they must be approved by the Saeima in the third – final – reading.

Discussions about the age threshold for purchasing intoxicating beverages will continue in the final reading, and there are versions of a different age threshold for purchasing light and alcoholic beverages.

In the Social and Labor Affairs Committee of the Saeima, discussions on ways to limit alcohol consumption took place in several long meetings. When this topic came up for discussion in the plenary session of the Saeima, the most talked about turned out to be raising the age limit for buying alcohol. The proposal to raise the age threshold for the purchase of alcohol to 20, previously supported by the responsible commission of the Saeima, did not receive support.
