Protests in Georgia. Spring of 2024

Protests in Georgia do not stop. Thousands of people take to the streets with one demand to the authorities – not to support the bill on “foreign agents”. The history of the law on “foreign agents” began in Georgia in the spring of 2023. On March 7, the parliament supported the project in the first reading. In fact, the law is similar to the one previously adopted in Russia. According to it, all mass media and public organizations that receive at least 20% of funding from foreign countries will receive the status of “agents of foreign influence”, writes Unian.

If the law is passed, the state leadership will be able to accuse a large part of the media and organizations of working in the interests of another state. In fact, they have already started doing it: with this term, the ruling party of Georgia designates anyone who does not agree with its policy, the portal writes.

For example, according to Georgia’s Radio Liberty, state-affiliated Russian mass media such as Sputnik Georgia are not persecuted by the ruling party and are not subject to this law. Namely, the document is actually addressed directly to those media or organizations that receive help from Western partners. And that is why this law is so strongly supported by the pro-Russian party of Georgia.

Immediately after the Georgian parliament approved the bill in the first reading, the citizens of the country started to take to the streets. However, already on the first day, the peaceful protests were dispersed by special forces. When the protesters tried to resist, water cannons and tear gas were used. The participants left the protest sites, but later returned.

On March 10, 2023, however, parliamentarians rejected the “Foreign Agents Law” in the second reading. Then the protests subsided and everyone forgot about the “Russian law”. For a moment.

At the end of April 2024, the Georgian parliament resumed the second reading of the bill on “foreign agents” – people took to the streets for a peaceful protest, but the police and special forces began to use force. But this time, the parliament ignored the protests and adopted the document in the second reading. “For” – the classic 83 deputies from the ruling pro-Russian party “Georgian Dream” and their henchmen – “People’s power”.

Now people continue to take to the streets and the police continue to use force and arrest protesters. What’s more, residents have already started building barricades on the streets of Tbilisi. Everything is very reminiscent of the events in Ukraine in 2013-2014.
