After several hours of questioning, Depardieu was released, but will appear in court in October.
The trial will deal with allegations of sexual harassment that took place in 2021 during the filming of the film “Les Volets Verts” (The Green Shutters). A 53-year-old woman reports that Depardieu pushed her against the wall and touched various parts of her body.
The 75-year-old Depardieu has been in the spotlight in recent years with several such accusations.
In 2018, a 22-year-old actress accused Depardieu of sexual harassment and rape. The French authorities continue to evaluate the case. The investigation in this case has recently been completed, and the prosecutor’s office will have to decide on the next course of action.
In December of last year, the actress Emanuele Debevera, who had also accused Depardieu of sexual harassment, committed suicide.
Depardieu has denied the allegations against him, stressing that he has never hurt women. “I am not a rapist or an abuser,” Depardieu wrote in an open letter published last year.
Depardieu is one of the most famous French actors: he has been nominated 17 times and twice won the main prize of French cinema “César”, he won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for the film “Cyrano de Bergerac” and was nominated for an “Oscar”.
Depardieu’s reputation has been tarnished by his fraternization with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and other dictators. In 2013, he was even granted Russian citizenship.
“I adore Russia, your people, your history and culture. My father was a communist who used to listen to Moscow radio! I love President Putin and I think it’s both. Russia is a great democracy,” Depardieu said at the time.
However, in 2022, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Depardieu condemned Putin’s actions.
