The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) announced on Monday that there is a lack of charging points for electric cars in the European Union (EU) and their deployment lags behind the pace of sales of such cars.

The data collected by ACEA shows that since 2017, the volume of sales of electric cars has grown three times faster than the rate of installation of charging points.

“We need the mass use of electric cars in all EU countries to achieve Europe’s ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets,” said ACEA Secretary General Sigrid de Vries.

“This will not happen without the availability of extensive public charging infrastructure throughout the region,” she stressed.

The European Commission estimates that by 2030 it will be necessary to install 3.5 million charging points.

ACEA says that reaching this goal would mean installing 8,000 charging points every week by then, which is about three times the current number.

But the association also emphasizes that 3.5 million charging points will not be enough. It estimates that 8.8 million charging points will be needed by 2030, which means installing 22,000 points per week, or eight times more than currently.
