Mission “Mars 2050”

The children’s room invites you to learn the various skills that a future astronaut needs in order to possibly go on a mission to Mars in 2050. With the help of the Space Knowledge Center, we will publish a task every day that will help children become active, independent, critical thinkers – real astronauts.

We will post one challenge every day that will help you develop one of the skills an astronaut needs, you just have to practice hard!

Research and exploratory thinking is a very important skill for the future. We usually associate research with scientists, but investigative thinking can be developed already in preschool. Studying and observing different processes trains skills that will be especially important for astronauts!

Observation of celestial objects

The International Space Station and spacecraft are equipped with modern and highly accurate navigation systems, but astronauts know how to roughly navigate without them.

The Sun, Earth and Moon are used as the main reference objects to determine location. Have you observed any other celestial bodies? Have you seen moving or flashing “stars”? Bright short-lived stars are also called “shooting stars”.

What are shooting stars? As every year at this time, the Earth is now in the Lyrid meteor shower, which means that “shooting stars” can be observed more often in the clear night sky. Meteors that enter the Earth’s atmosphere fall very quickly and burn up before reaching the ground, so we temporarily see a bright “shooting star.”

Sometimes you can also see twinkling moving stars – these are satellites that observe the Earth, provide communication functions or explore the universe!

The task requires appropriate clothing and patience! It is best to make observations in places where there is no lighting – outside densely populated areas. It is also recommended to prepare a frozen mobile phone with one of the applications that help you navigate the night sky, for example Sky Map, Stellarium, Star Walk, Sky Guide.

Plan to go for a night walk with your parents and watch the sky! Prepare the worksheet yourself or print the suggested one.

Go outside and observe objects in the night sky! Don’t forget to arm yourself with stationery, patience and preferably a mobile phone for easier recognition of celestial objects!

During the walk, observe the sky and record them on the worksheet.

Did you notice all the objects on the worksheet? What did you notice more – meteors or satellites?
