The Riga municipality has produced the first street name and building address number plates with the names of Emīlijas Benjamiņas and Lastādijas streets, and they will gradually be placed in the city environment, the Riga City Council’s External Communication Department informed LETA agency.

The owners or managers of the buildings in these streets are invited to receive the new signs at the Center for the Residents of Riga Neighborhoods, Daugavpils Street 31.

Today, the first signs with the new name of the street were installed near the Riga Central Market and Spīķeru quarter buildings in the early stages of Lastādijas Street.

Riga Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (JV) emphasized at the event that the decision to change the names of several Riga streets, introducing place names in the urban environment that represent personalities or historical names important to Latvia, was the first step to organize the living space around us in our thoughts and minds.

“With the replacement of street name plates, we are already practically arranging the living space, and I invite Riga residents not only to replace the plates on the walls of buildings, but also to use the new street names on a daily basis. Today we symbolically started with the first street plates on the former Maskavas Street, which is now and will be in the future Lastadija Street, thus marking the historical name of this neighborhood,” said ķirsis.

“During these two years, Riga has tried to erase the symbols, objects and its heroes of the Soviet regime, bringing to life in Riga the names, deeds and meaning of our national heroes. Therefore, the new street names, which will be gradually visible in the urban environment from today, allow us to remind and respect those who have invested their work and talent to build our common future,” said Riga Vice Mayor Edvards Ratnieks (NA/LRA).

Street names and address signs with the names of the streets of Latgale, Jānis Klījes, Kārlis Mülenbach, Vilhelms Purvīš, Viļas Plūdonis, Valērijas Seiles and Augusta Spariņas will be produced and issued gradually in April and May of this year.

As soon as the new signs are ready, the municipality will inform the residents separately with the help of the media and social networks, as well as by posting information on the municipality’s website “riga.lv”.

In order to receive the new signs, building owners and managers are invited to contact the Riga Neighborhood Center at 31 Daugavpils Street, Riga, at least one day in advance.

At the same time, the municipality has already identified about 200 largest house owners and managers, who in total own about 25% of the properties in the renamed streets, they will be contacted individually after the production of street name signs and building number signs.

The new signs must be installed in exactly the same places as the signs with the old street names and building addresses.

As reported, on February 21, Riga City Council decided to rename Maskavas and several other streets in the capital. The new names of the streets in Riga are Latgales, Lastādijas, Jānis Klīžės, Kārļas Mīlenbach, Vilhelmas Purvīš, Viļas Plūdoņas, Emīlijas Benjamiņas, Valērijas Seiles and Augusta Spariņa streets.
