The capital’s schools will start recruiting 1st graders for the next school year next week, on May 15. Riga municipality reminds the parents of future first-graders to make sure that they have registered together with their child at the same address in the territory assigned to the school.

Children’s parents have the right to submit applications to the school for their child’s registration in the line of 1st class applicants until May 15, according to the requirements of regulatory acts.

The binding regulations “The procedure for registering and examining applications for admission of children to the 1st grade in the educational institutions of the Riga city municipality” provide that schools, when assembling classes for the new school year, create a list of applicants for first graders. Within five working days after the preparation of the list of 1st grade applicants, the school will electronically send letters to the specified official electronic address or e-mail address to the parents of the children to inform them whether or not the child is included in the school’s list of 1st grade applicants.

If the child’s parents did not specify the official electronic address or e-mail address in the application when applying for the child’s admission to the 1st grade, then the notification about the inclusion of the child in the list of applicants for the 1st grade or the letter of refusal will be sent by registered mail to the address of the residence declared by the child’s parents .

The rules also provide that after receiving the notification about the child’s inclusion in the list of applicants for admission to the 1st grade, the child’s parents submit an application to the school within 10 calendar days for the admission of the child to the 1st grade or for refusal.

The child’s parents will be able to submit the application to the school in person, upon arrival at the school, or electronically, by signing with a secure electronic signature and sending it to the school’s e-mail address or official e-mail address, using their activated official e-mail account on the portal www.latvija.lv.

At the same time, the child’s legal representative can contact the Department of Education, Culture and Sports of the Riga Municipality to find out which educational institution closest to the child’s declared place of residence currently has free places.

Priority will be given to those children who have registered with one of their parents for at least 12 months at the same address in the area covered by the respective school. The highest priority will also apply to children – orphans, children of school pedagogues, as well as brothers or sisters studying in the basic education program of the relevant educational institution. This priority admission procedure was approved by the Riga City Council last year.
