Minister of Health Hosam Abu Meri welcomed the professionals of the health sector at a solemn ceremony – honored seven recipients of the Letter of Appreciation of the Cabinet of Ministers, as well as 49 recipients of the Letter of Appreciation and 33 Letter of Appreciation of the Ministry of Health. The Minister expressed appreciation to all for selflessness, professionalism and excellent work in the field of healthcare and public health.

“2024. year is more stable and predictable in the sector than the previous one and it is a confirmation that the health sector is a priority in the country along with safety. Measures are being implemented in the sector to ensure modern, high-quality and affordable health care for Latvian residents, and an orderly and modern working environment for medical personnel. It is important that in the fast pace of everyday life we find a moment to stop a little and appreciate what we have done. Therefore, it is my pleasure and honor, in the spirit of Latvia’s national holiday, to say thank you to every person working in health care – for endurance and perseverance, for knowledge and professionalism. And for protecting the health of the people of Latvia,” Hosam Abu Meri said while addressing the awardees at the ceremony.

In the emergency medical service, Sarmīti describes Paeglīti as follows: “Sarmīti is characterized by key words such as responsibility, confidence, initiative, development and sincerity. There is not a moment when she is not on the move – always active, and with all her heart in everything she does and touches. Sarmīte has been in the service since 2009, gradually moving up the career ladder and in 2022 becoming the head of the brigade support center Jēkabpils. As a manager, it is important for Sarmīte to recognize the areas for improvement of each employee, therefore, with her initiative and enterprise, different levels of training and practical training are organized so that every member of her team strengthens their readiness more and better. In addition, she will always make sure that her family members feel that they belong, are welcome, are loved – just like at home!

In parallel with her work in the service, Sarmīte is active in the National Guard. This has helped her to develop the knowledge and skills of medical personnel directly in civil-military cooperation. A big challenge for her and the staff of the brigade support center Jēkabpils led by her was ensuring the continuity of emergency medical aid during the flood of Jēkabpils in January 2023 and ensuring readiness in February 2024, as well as work in the Civil Defense Commission of the Jēkabpils municipality. Under the leadership of Sarmīte, the brigade support center was evacuated to premises more suitable for operations at that time. At the same time, it was necessary to move all medical resources so that the 12 EMS teams under the command were provided and ready to respond to calls. An unimaginably massive job that required iron strength, clear vision and keeping calm every second.

Sarmīte is a patriot of her country and service, who will always do much more than what is expected of her. With a big heart and soul for the entire Latvian people!”.
