On Thursday, May 9, Minister of Health Hosams Abu Meri visited the Bauska hospital and got acquainted with the practice of Ina Mortukāne’s family doctor. Together with the Minister of Health, Director of the National Health Service Āris Kasparāns, Director of the Health Care Department of the Ministry of Health Sanita Janka and Head of the Office of the Minister of Health Renāte Gremze had arrived in Bauska.

The minister listened to the report of the head of the Bauska hospital, Margaritas Epermanes, about the development plans of the medical institution.

“It is important to understand what services each hospital in the region can offer and provide. Satisfaction with Bauska Hospital’s determination to significantly improve the range and quality of services. In order to ensure this quality in the future, we need new specialists who are ready to work in hospitals in the regions,” said Health Minister Hosam Abu Meri.

He informed those present about the informative report on the development of the hospital network adopted by the government on April 30, which this year and in the following two years envisages taking measures aimed at monitoring the quality of treatment processes and effective management of the hospital network. The Minister explained that the additional funding will be directed to the Emergency Medicine and Patient Reception Departments of hospitals and the provision of observation beds.

In order to cover the costs related to the improvement of data integration and transfer to E-health, a special payment for hospitals is planned, because the availability of data contributes to the quality and speed of patient care, ensures the availability of comprehensive information to medical personnel. By reviewing the ability of hospitals to provide services according to a certain level, there will be a transition from lower-level hospitals to more complicated services in higher-level hospitals.

Bauska hospital has 29 beds, the hospital currently provides medical profiles for therapy and care, but as an additional profile – care for chronic patients. 19 doctors work in the hospital in the main job, and 50 more are employed in the side job. There are 18 nurses in the hospital, as well as other medical and medical support persons. Bauska hospital plans to implement development projects by attracting funding from EU funds. The hospital’s management informed that the priority would be to invest in the construction of a day hospital with operating theaters, an endoscopy department and a reception department. It is planned to buy medical equipment as part of the recovery and resilience mechanism.

While visiting the practice of Ina Mortukāne’s family doctor in the city of Bauska, the Minister of Health got acquainted with the family doctor’s team, the practice’s equipment and the range of services provided to residents. As in other parts of Latvia, attracting new family doctors and changing generations of family doctors is also relevant in Bauska and Bauska county.

There are 12 family doctors in Bauska and 9 of them also have a second practice in Bauska county. Hosam Abu Meri, on the other hand, indicated plans to develop a multiprofessional approach in primary health care, which includes the promotion of cooperation and the development of joint practices. The informative report on primary health care is planned to be forwarded to the government in May.

The Minister of Health Hosam Abu Meri regularly goes on regional visits to familiarize himself with the provision of health care services and meet with professionals in the health care sector, inform about priorities and discuss current affairs in the field of health.
