Similarly, in the Upper Daugava region, the border guards detained three more Sri Lankan citizens who were traveling in a “Volkswagen Polo” car on suspicion of providing support to migrants.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against Sri Lankan citizens for knowingly providing a person with the opportunity to stay illegally in the Republic of Latvia, if this was done by an organized group. For the mentioned actions, persons can be punished with deprivation of liberty from two to eight years.

Six citizens of third countries were prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with the order of the Cabinet of Ministers on the announcement of an enhanced operating regime of the border protection system.

It has already been reported that on Wednesday, the State Border Guard prevented a total of nine illegal migrants from illegally crossing the Latvia-Belarus border, while one of the illegal migrants was not prevented from crossing the border due to humanitarian reasons.

In total, 1,684 people have been prevented from illegally crossing the border this year, while nine people have been admitted to Latvia for humanitarian reasons.

Due to the increasing pressure of illegal immigration, from March 13 to September 12, the enhanced operational regime of the border protection system is again in effect on the Latvian-Belarusian border.

Last year, 13,863 people were prevented from illegally crossing the state border, and 428 people were admitted for humanitarian reasons. On the other hand, in 2022, 5,286 people’s attempts to illegally cross the Latvia-Belarus border were prevented, while 217 people were not prevented from crossing the border due to humanitarian reasons.
