Daugavpils celebrates Europe Day in general education schools

Europe is us, because we are European citizens, we are the bearers and creators of European values. We are the ones who must not only enjoy democracy, but build it. Celebrating 20 years since Latvia joined the European Union, celebrating Europe Day, Daugavpils state schools are holding many different events: European lessons, competitions, excursions, meetings with interesting European and Latvian personalities, concerts and educational promotions.

On May 8, in the yard of Daugavpils State Gymnasium and Daugavpils Vienības Elementary School, the Yard Festival was held for the second year, organized by Europe Direct South Latgale Center, European Parliament (EP) office in Latvia, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Baltic States, Latvian Civic Alliance, Southern Latgale NGO Support Center and NGOs. The celebration was widely attended, as a special program was prepared for both elementary school students and high school students. The students of Daugavpils comprehensive schools performed at the European Backyard Festival, participated in various activities offered by non-governmental organizations, and took photos with Mayor Andrejas Elksniņa and one of the most famous Latvian influencers – Lauri Zalana. Also, high school students participated in Europe Day activities in Daugavpils Vienības nama together with the improvisation theater “Divas”, debated in English and Latvian Europe Direct Southern Latgale and Europe Direct Visaginas in the international debates organized by the center and the association “Debašu Centrs” on the gains and losses of the Baltics in the European Union.

Special events were held in the schools of the ambassadors of the European Parliament: Daugavpils State Gymnasium and Daugavpils State City Secondary School. The students educated their peers about the EP elections by playing the EP election simulation game, discussing universal values ​​and liberalism.
