On Saturday afternoon, the anthem of Latvia is heard over the mountains of Germany, and then – cheers filled with reunion and festive joy. Dozens of Latvians from all over the world have come here to sing together, have a festive meal together and most importantly – to say thank you for a free and flourishing Latvia.

“As is traditional every year, this year too, in my opinion, perhaps the most important thing on this day is to mention the power of our song, the power of us coming together,” said Rolands Eimanis, pastor of Latvian churches.

The event was opened with a holy moment, which was led by the pastor of Latvian churches, Rolands Eimanis, and the gathered were also addressed by the owners of Bērzaine – Inese and Āris Aveni.

“Today is, of course, a special day, because we respect our mother, we respect Latvia. It’s good for us to live this way – respecting what is sacred,” said Inese Avena, owner of the Latvian center “Bērzaine”.

The Dobele women’s choir “Vizma” and brass band “Dobele” also visited “Bērzaini” during the festivities and played there.

“Such a holiday – together with German Latvians, with compatriots who have our country in their hearts as well (..) I am a teacher and I always say to my students: “Live so that your life is an event!” And for us it really is an event,” said Kristīne Pakule, a member of the Dobele women’s choir “Vizma”.

“Bērzaines” farm at the foot of the castle ruins of Céringen was established more than 70 years ago. Initially, it was a home for Latvian war invalids, but over time it turned into a guest house and a place where Latvians meet on various occasions.

Easter was recently celebrated there and soon the house will be ruined for the Summer Solstice.

“Today, Latvia [neatkarības] on the day of renewal of the declaration, I would like people in Latvia to be happy, for us to be happy abroad and for us all to believe together that Latvia will have a lifetime of sunshine and that these are not empty words. May our language, our nation and culture live forever and ever, and may there be such people who do it from the heart – not only paid work, but also voluntary work,” said the owner of the Latvian center “Bērzaine”.
