The 4th of May Latvian film marathon of the National Cinema Center (NKC) will be held for the twentieth time on the national holiday, which will take place in two parallel formats – in the cinema “Splendid Palace” and on the online portal “filmas.lv”, informed NKC representative Kristīne Matīsa.

The broadest section of the May 4 Latvian film marathon is screenings in both halls of the “Splendid Palace” cinema. The festive program will start at 13:00 in the Great Hall, where there will be an animation show for children.

At the screening, you will be able to watch the latest puppet film by the studio “Animation brigade” and the director Ines Pavėnes, “Burkāns neparastais”, as well as nine other films of different studios and directors, shot in the past twenty years.

On the other hand, the cinema in the Great Hall will also screen the 2024 documentary film “Potnieks par Podnieku. Witness of Time” by directors Antra Cilinska and Anna Vidulejas and a selection of short films by young authors, while the evening premiere will be director Dzintra Gek’s documentary film “Juris Jurjāns. Seven days with painting, talking , silence”.

Four screenings are planned in the small hall of the cinema “Splendid Palace” from 2:30 p.m. Those interested will be able to watch two new feature films – director Elsa Gauja’s 2024 film “Postcard from Rome”, Liene Linde’s tragicomedy “Black Velvet”, as well as two documentaries – the portrait of skier Patricija Eidukas “Patricia” by directors Dāvids Ernsthreit and Inese Kļava and director Pēter Krilov’s 2008 film “Klucis. The wrong Latvian” about the victim of the Stalin-era “Latvian operation”, the artist of Latvian origin Gustavus Klucis. At the end of the evening, with the onset of darkness, an open-air screening in the forecourt of the cinema is planned, where the 1986 film “Is it easy to be young?” by documentary filmmaker Podniekas will be shown.

On the NKC portal “filmas.lv”, the holiday program will include several films related to Latvia’s entry into the European Union (EU), for example, an anthology of documentary short films created by 12 directors, each filming a character in different parts of Latvia, but on the same day. – on September 20, 2003, when a popular vote for or against joining the EU took place in Latvia. New feature films will also be available online – the 2023 work “Mother’s milk” by director Inara Kolmane, the 2023 film “The sun shines 24 hours” by director Jura Poškus. The portal’s film program will be available on May 4 around the clock around the world according to the local time of each country.
