Over the past two years, Estonia has seriously responded to the threat posed by Russia and has significantly developed its defense forces, however, more complex and difficult times could be ahead, Estonian Army Commander General Martin Herem admitted at the annual review of the Defense Forces.

“Russia continues the war in Ukraine, demonstrating aggression both in the rhetoric of the ruling elite and society, and plans to increase the size of its military forces and the output of military industry,” Herem writes in the preface of the annual report, adding that Russia continues to use hybrid vehicles against Estonia as well.

As the commander of the Estonian army expressed, the Estonian Defense Forces and even the entire country have taken such threats quite seriously in the last two years and the defense forces have developed significantly.

“Probably more difficult and difficult times are ahead of us, but we have more iron, more people and more wisdom than ever before. That gives confidence,” Herem adds.

Considering the current security situation, the annual review of the Defense Forces focuses on the development of the Estonian military defense. It also includes some key observations about the war in Ukraine that are important learning insights for the Defense Forces, both in an academic context and in training development.

In its annual report, the Defense Forces Military Intelligence Center has compiled an overview of how Russia has operated and adapted to full-scale war over the past two years, as well as the most important factors influencing the course of the war.
