For driving at a red light – not only a fine, but also four penalty points
I was dazzled by the sun, I didn’t notice that the traffic light was changing, I suspected that the person sitting next to me was distracted from the road – such reservations are most often mentioned by drivers who are recorded on the city’s video surveillance cameras, crossing the intersection at a red light or making a maneuver before the green arrow signal lights up in the additional section of the traffic light. The municipal police emphasizes: for such a gross violation of traffic rules, the driver receives not only a fine, but also four penalty points.
Jelgava municipal police state that in March, the additional section initiated 14 administrative violation proceedings for driving at a red light or turning before the traffic light, and 22 in April. All these cases were recorded in the city’s video surveillance system.
Most often, these gross violations, thus endangering both themselves and other road users, are committed at the intersection of Lielas iela and Dambja iela, at the intersection of Rīgas iela and Pērnavas iela, at the intersection of Rīgas iela and Brīvības boulevard, as well as at the intersection of Lielas iela and Akadēmijas iela.
The police emphasize: for non-observance of Section 52, Part 1 of the Road Traffic Law – driving when the prohibitory signal is lit at the traffic light, or for disobeying the traffic regulator’s signal – the driver is fined from 30 to 140 euros. But according to Section 52, Part 2 of the Road Traffic Law – for driving in the relevant direction, if the green arrow signal is not lit in the supplementary section of the traffic light – a warning or fine from 30 to 55 euros is applied to the driver of the vehicle.
In addition, at the moment of entry into force of the decision on the application of the administrative penalty, when it has become indisputable, the violator also receives four penalty points. Information on the application of an administrative penalty to the driver of the vehicle is transferred to the State Register of Vehicles and their Drivers in the online data transmission mode from the Penalty Register.
It should be reminded that video surveillance cameras are placed at regulated intersections in Jelgava, where violations of road traffic rules are recorded, after which police officers initiate administrative proceedings and the guilty persons are brought to justice.
