Latvia’s 20th anniversary in the European Union was celebrated in Riga – Riga

Latvia’s 20th anniversary in the European Union was celebrated in Riga in a festive mood – listening to a special holiday concert together, participating in a flash event with the largest EU flag in Latvia and the “Latvija shines in Europe” light campaign.

The municipality already announced that in honor of the 20th anniversary of Latvia’s entry into the European Union (EU), the Riga municipality, together with the representation of the European Commission in Latvia, gave the residents a special holiday concert story – “You are at home. You are EU”, which could be watched live from the National Library of Latvia.

The main goal of the concert was an invitation to everyone to realize the importance of national independence and the right decision for Latvia’s membership in the European Union.

The Riga Chamber Choir “Ave Sol” and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra took part in the concert. Conductors: Andris Veismanis, Jurģis Cābulis and Jānis Stafeckis. Iveta Apkalnas (organ), Raimonds Tiguls (piano, horns). Soloists: Mārtiņš Klišāns and Aleksandra Špitzberga, Gustavs Švédenberg. Concert leaders: Inga Misāne-Grasberga, Gundars Grasbergs, Ilze Nagla, Jānis Geste. The artistic concept and direction of the concert story was created by the director Kārlis Anitens.

Among them, in honor of Latvia’s twentieth anniversary in the European Union, on May 1, festive installations in the colors of the European flag shone in four Latvian cities – Riga, Rēzekne, Cēsis and Liepāja. In Riga, the rays of light in the sky could be observed near the Freedom Monument, in Rēzekne – near the Latgale Embassy “GORS”, in Cēsis – near the Vidzeme Concert Hall, while in Liepāja – in “Rose Square”.

Meanwhile, as part of the flash action MésEsamEiropa , a march was held from Dome Square to the Freedom Monument with large-format Latvian and European Union flags. At the end of the march, under the leadership of the Latvian Diplomatic Choir, the participants of the flash action united in the performance of the anthem of Latvia and the EU.
