The Slovaks led 8-1 after the second period, but the final break lasted an hour due to the quality of the ice field, and the team finished the game on the adjacent practice field.

The Latvian national team won 4th place in the five-team group A and will meet the strongest team in group B – Canada – in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Slovakia, Latvia and Norway each collected three points in the national team group, winning and losing in each other’s matches, therefore the distribution of places was determined by the difference between goals scored and conceded in each other’s matches. The Slovaks thus moved up to the 3rd place, but the Norwegians remained last in the group and the fight continues for remaining in the elite against the weakest team of the other group.

Previously, in the group stage, Latvian ice hockey players led by head coach Oleg Sorokin lost to Finland (1:3), scored their only victory over their peers from Slovakia (5:3), and also suffered defeats against the USA national team (1:7) and Norwegians (3:5).

At the World Championship, the semi-finals will take place on May 4, and the medal winners will be announced in the finals on May 5.
