Also this year, with the support of the local government, the associations of Riga residents and neighborhoods have ensured the implementation of environmental improvements in their neighborhoods – new lawns, flower beds and renewed pavements have been installed.
Last year, Riga City Council started a pilot project in which residents’ associations that want to organize a piece of municipal land were offered practical support – black soil, lawn seeds, compost and containers for waste collection. This spring, ten associations of Riga residents applied for the project with the initiative to carry out improvement works in 11 places. The beautification works started during the Great Cleanup and with the support of the municipality, the residents installed new flower beds, sowed lawns, renewed the decorations and collected garbage. Land improvement will continue.
In total, 83.5 cubic meters of black soil and 3.3 cubic meters of compost were supplied to the residents’ associations for the work, as well as 35.5 kilograms of lawn seeds. Support for residents’ associations was organized and provided by the Center of Residents of Riga Neighborhoods in cooperation with SIA “Rīgas meži”. On the other hand, the removal of waste collected by residents’ associations was organized during the Great Cleanup, with the involvement of the Territorial Improvement Department of Riga municipality.
Such a support mechanism has been tried out, referring to the interest of the residents themselves to improve the territory belonging to the municipality in the vicinity with their own hands. Last year, three residents’ associations applied for support.
