Undeniably, the very fact of ratification begins with the hard part of the turned page – the implementation of the obligations stipulated in it. By becoming a member state of the convention, Latvia will finally be included in the monitoring system of the convention’s supervisory authority – “Grevio”.

Tomorrow, life will not change drastically and all laws will not be amended. States usually make all these changes already in preparation for ratification. From the legal framework, almost everything included in the convention has already been implemented over the years, says Beata Jonite, policy coordinator of the “Marta” center.

Already in the last few months, a regulation on sexual harassment has been created, which is Article 40 of the Istanbul Convention: “We have never had such. Has been only in the labor law. Currently, in this regard, the amount of punishment with administrative or criminal liability is being discussed. The Saeima has already voted for electronic monitoring in several readings. Also, there are changes regarding emotional violence, the temporary protection system. Several exercises have also been started that will serve in the long term.”

Currently, there are no centers in Latvia for persons who have suffered from sexual violence. This requirement is also part of the Istanbul Convention. Also, Latvia will finally have to implement a plan to prevent violence. Currently, this plan has already been created and is awaiting approval.
