It’s no secret that electric cars are gaining more and more popularity, given that they not only provide economic benefits, but also promote sustainable mobility. As a result, the number of drivers who prefer electric cars is increasing. When purchasing their first electric car, drivers are often faced with various innovations that can affect their daily habits. Eleport has compiled five tips or unwritten rules that every electric car driver should follow.

Prepare for the charging process

The best way to be prepared is to download a trip planning app such as Plugshare, where you can view all available charging stations and select them as needed. When moving with an electric car, the ABRP app will also be useful (A Better Route Planner), intended for planning further journeys. Whether you are planning to go on a trip right here in Latvia or on a further trip abroad, the mobile app gives you the opportunity to plan car charging during the trip in detail. By entering the model of the electric car and specifying the desired battery charge level upon arrival at the destination, the app will calculate the most appropriate route for you, determine the most convenient charging points and the required charging time in each of them.

Remember – charging stations are not parking spaces

Why not use the charging station as a good parking space? There are two reasons for this – you will be paying for charging that you do not need, and you will be taking up charging space for nothing that could be used by other electric car drivers. In order to respect other motorists, it is recommended to vacate the charging area as soon as the electric car charging process is completed.

Before you go, check your electric car

As with internal combustion cars, also when moving with an electric car, it is necessary to pay attention to the technical condition of the car. For example, before you set off, regardless of the length and distance of the trip, check your car’s tires. Most electric car models have a function that informs about the tire pressure, but it will not hurt if you do a visual check of the condition of the tires yourself. If the pressure is too low, the car’s braking distance increases, making accidents more likely. Compared to internal combustion engine cars, electric cars have fewer parts that could cause technical problems, however, you should not forget about the technical maintenance of your car and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Be prepared for any situation

It must be admitted that situations when the electric car’s energy has completely run out are rare, considering that the electric car warns you in time about the state of the battery and allows you to find a safe stopping place even in the case of a zero battery. If you are the owner of an electric car that is less than five years old, official representatives of car brands often offer the opportunity to use free technical assistance provided on the road. When going on longer journeys, Eleport experts recommend making sure that charging facilities are available in or near the selected lodgings, and for safety’s sake, bring a charging cable or a home charger that can be connected to a regular outlet.

Respect different opinions

You may often encounter people who do not see electric cars as objectively one of the most ecological forms of transportation. It is important to realize that we all have different values, desires and interests. An effective way to communicate with those who are convincingly “against” electric cars – to highlight the various advantages of electric cars and environmentally friendly solutions in an understandable and calm way. Even if the opposite opinion seems absurd to you, communicate with a cool mind and understanding.
