There are risks of recruitment, blackmail, false accusations, phone checks and other threats when traveling to Russia and Belarus. The State Security Service (VDD) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MA) urge you not to visit these countries – a total of 27 Latvian nationals were detained there last year, and the ministry admits that this could also be in unjustified and politically motivated cases. However, tourism to Russia and Belarus still continues. Certain tour operators offer to explore the history of Belarus and go to sanatoriums, while passenger flights from Riga to these countries run several times a day.
