Two companies, which have been caught selling food products with fake expiry dates for several years, operate freely in the Riga Central Market.

Laura Bagātā, SIA “Orkla Latvija” communications manager: “There were also some products that, in principle, will not be produced from 2022. [..] Therefore, we have no idea how old the product is.”

In spite of regular fines imposed by the Food and Veterinary Service for violations, the manager of the Central Market “Rīgas nami” keeps giving new sales points to companies.

Henriks Danusēvičs, president of the Latvian Traders Association: “It must be said that at the moment “Rīgas Nami” have, in my opinion, acted irresponsibly towards the society and the Riga City Council.”

Why has the Riga Central Market failed to limit the practices of dishonest traders for years? And why do local brands allow companies to market their products with fake expiration dates?
