The Latvian Nature Foundation opens this year’s event season with a landscape tour dedicated to birds and wetlands “Spring birds on Grīvu Island” on May 11, from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m., in the Lubān wetland. Spring is the rutting and nesting season of birds, which can be particularly well observed in this important wetland for birds. During the event, those interested will have the opportunity to get to know the diversity of birds in the floodplain meadows of Grivu Island together with ornithologist Jānis Ķuzi, as well as to learn more about the management of floodplain meadows with the owner of “Tīravoti” Ivars Silkāns. All interested parties are invited to participate in the landscape tour, participation in the event is free of charge, but prior registration is mandatory.

Landscape tour ornithologist Jānis Ķuze (Latvijas Dabas fund) will lead the participants on an expedition through the Grīvu island of the Lubān wetland, where the moisture regime is currently being restored in large areas, which is important not only for birds, but also for rare and protected plants, amphibians and other species. Jānis has been engaged in bird research and protection for more than 25 years and has participated in the restoration of many important habitat areas for birds, including Grivu Island.

The open landscapes of floodplains attract many different species of birds during spring migration and nesting, which are important resting and feeding grounds. They are also the main nesting sites for the rare cicada and the protected tern. There are also nesting birds such as broad-billed plover, plover, meadow plover, plover, black plover, gugatnis, ormanitis, grebe, etc. More than 250 bird species have been found in the Lubān wetland, and it is one of the most important places for birds in the country. This summer, there will also be a unique opportunity to participate in the landscape tour “Songs of Night Birds on Grivu sala” on the night of June 8 to 9, when you will have the opportunity to get to know the river floodplain and the birds’ voices in the dark together with Jāni Ķuzi.

Participation in landscape tours is free. Apply for the May 11 landscape tour by filling out the form: https://ej.uz/Grivu_Salu. The number of places on the tour is limited. For lunch, we will enjoy a delicious vegetarian soup made in the field.

This summer, the Latvian Nature Foundation will also invite you to landscape tours in Randi meadows, park-like meadows, offer Meadow Taste Days and other events. Calendar of events available here.
