on April 27 from From 11.00 to 18.00, visitors will be able to discover the new exhibition of the Seaside Open-Air Museum, and they will also be able to discover news in the outdoor area of the museum. The season will also be opened by Mazbānītis, which will run on the Ringka line.

The new museum building is part of the large-scale project “Cultural-historical and natural heritage preservation of Northern Kurzeme, exhibition and development of tourism offer”. On January 17, 2018, a contract was signed with the Central Finance and Contracts Agency for the implementation of this project, within the framework of which the Ventspils Museum together with the Ventspils Communal Administration implemented two activities – the infrastructure was created in Ventspils, in the south-western district, for the accessibility and preservation of the Gray Dune and Ventspils Seaside Open Air museum building.

Jānis Vītoliņš, chairman of the Ventspils City Council, says the following about the happy event: “The previous museum building was built in 1970, it was both morally and physically outdated, it was not suitable for modern museological requirements for storage and work. It is a pleasure that the six-year long process has come to an end and our city has acquired a new, beautiful building, which is equipped with both modern restoration workshops, storage rooms and, of course, a new exhibition”.

In the new building, whose shape resembles a ship docked on the shore (architect Ija Rudzīte), the exposition “By the sea to the land” (Ddstudio in cooperation with Ventspils Museum specialists) has been installed. The exposition tells about the everyday life of the inhabitants of the Kurzeme coast and reflects the life of Latvian, Libyan farmers and fishermen. More than 300 items from the museum’s collection are on display, starting with fishing hooks and ending with large fishing boots. The digital elements of the exhibition visually express how fishing boats and thatched roofs were made, while the small witty animations about farm work will appeal not only to the youngest visitors. An exposition of the nature of Northern Kurzeme has also been created – a diorama with the most characteristic animals and birds whose voices can be heard, creating the presence of a real forest. Walking in the outdoor area of the museum is complemented by a mobile app that can be downloaded when visiting the museum.

Throughout the day on Saturday, the collectives of the Ventspils Culture Center will delight visitors with songs and dances. There will be an outdoor cafe, horse riding and various activities for children.

Entrance with museum entrance tickets.
