In Sigulda, 70,000 smuggled cigarettes were found with two men

In March, as part of a previously initiated criminal process, law enforcement officers, carrying out special investigative activities in Sigulda, identified one of the involved persons, a man born in 1964, who supplied cigarettes without an excise stamp of the Republic of Latvia.

Also, during the investigation, the second person involved was identified, a man born in 1962.

On April 22, the employees of the Pierīgas Northern Station of the Riga Regional Administration of the State Police, in cooperation with the employees of the 1st Division of the Criminal Police Bureau of the Northern Administration of the State Police Riga Regional Administration, conducted two sanctioned searches in Sigulda region and seized a total of 71,880 cigarettes without excise stamps of the Republic of Latvia, as well as cash 7 270 euros.

In connection with the incident, a criminal proceeding was initiated according to the first part of Article 221 of the Criminal Law, namely for the illegal manufacture (production), storage, transfer or sale of alcoholic beverages or tobacco products, if this was done in a significant amount. Committing such a crime is punishable by deprivation of liberty for a period of up to two years or by temporary deprivation of liberty, or by probation supervision, or by community service, or by a fine.

Both persons were granted non-custodial bail. The detained persons had not previously been noticed by the police.

The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until his guilt in committing a criminal offense is proven in accordance with the law.
