On April 18, the municipal council of Ventspils state city supported the Ventspils museum’s idea to present the project “Sea, port, city: Ventspils 13th-19th centuries.” application in the Latvian Action Program for Fisheries Development 2023-2027 of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF). for the year.

Project “Sea, port, city: Ventspils 13th – 19th centuries.” The aim is to popularize the history of Kurzeme’s fishing and the preservation of the cultural and historical heritage related to the coastal lifestyle in society.

As a result of the project, it is planned to create a new permanent exhibition in the tower of the Livonian Order’s palace, on its 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, creating an informative and attractive narrative for visitors about the port as the basis of the emergence of the city of Ventspils, the port’s historical development, influence and connection with the city’s past and present . The mutual development of the port and the city is examined in the period from the 13th century. mid to 19th century, including as much as possible the reflection of the cultural and historical heritage of the coast in the city.

In the development of the exhibition, it is planned to use artistic and technical solutions that provide energy-efficient and climate change mitigating solutions, to maximize the sustainability of the developed exhibition and to ensure the integrity of the Livonian Order Palace in Ventspils as a cultural monument, without harming its architectural heritage.

In case of project support, Ventspils Museum 2024-2026. will implement the activities planned in the project for the total amount of EUR 527,000, incl. EJZAF funding in the amount of EUR 515,000. The total costs of the project implementation include the necessary project preparation works, the development and implementation of the artistic project of the exposition, as well as the necessary works for the conservation restoration of the castle tower.
