“Thanks for the information, I will take it into account. It is no secret that many goods are not on the sanctions list. They can be imported and sold,” answered Ervins Labanovskis, chairman of the Saeima’s Business Development Subcommittee (PRO), in the TV24 program “On the Line”.

It has already been reported that 61 companies registered in Latvia imported food products from Russia and Belarus in the first quarter of this year, the LETA agency found out from the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD).

The collected data show that including 39 companies imported food products from Russia and Belarus not only in the first quarter of this year, but also last year, while 22 companies imported food products only this year.

The list of companies mainly includes trade industry companies, logistics companies and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry.

PVD states that the list includes companies that imported food products themselves, as well as companies such as SIA “DSV Latvia”, SIA “Baltic Pack”, SIA “Lauku radi”, SIA “Reftrans Logistics” and SIA ” Trialto Latvia”, which are indicated as the destination of food products at the time of border control, because they provide, for example, warehouse services.

In 2023, a total of 85 companies registered in Latvia received food products from Russia and Belarus.

LETA already announced that on March 8, a ban on importing a number of agricultural and fodder products originating in Russia and Belarus came into effect in Latvia.

The regulations on agricultural and fodder products that are prohibited for import into Latvia developed by the Ministry of Agriculture (ZM) and approved by the Cabinet of Ministers stipulate that the ban applies to potatoes, tomatoes, various types of onions, garlic, cabbage, garden lettuce, carrots, table turnips and turnips, table beets, oat roots, celery roots, radishes and similar root vegetables, cucumbers and gherkins, legumes and other fresh vegetables.

Nuts, bananas, dates, figs, pineapples, avocados, citrus fruits, melons, pears, quinces, apricots, cherries, peaches, plums, blueberries from Russia and Belarus cannot be imported into Latvia. The ban also applies to frozen, canned and dried nut and fruit products.

Wheat and mixtures of wheat and rye, rye, barley, oats, corn, rice, grain sorghum and buckwheat cannot be imported from Russia and Belarus into Latvia.

The ban also applies to flour and pellets from meat or meat by-products, fish or crustaceans, molluscs or other aquatic invertebrates, bran, starch production residues and similar residues, sugarcane pomace and other sugar production waste, dregs or drippings, oil pomace from soybeans, peanut, cottonseed, linseed, rapeseed, coconut or palm nut oils.

From now on, grape sediments, materials of plant origin and plant waste, residues, by-products and products used in animal feed cannot be imported into Latvia from Russia and Belarus.

At the same time, it was reported that, compared to the initial list of goods subject to the import ban, a section was removed from it, which intended to prohibit the import of oilseeds and fruits of Russian and Belarus origin, as well as plants for industrial needs, straw and roughage into Latvia.

For example, it was originally intended to prohibit the import into Latvia of plants or parts of plants originating in Russia and Belarus, which are used mainly in perfumery, pharmaceuticals or for the preparation of insecticides and fungicides and similar purposes, carob pods, seaweed and other algae, sugar beet and sugar cane, fruit stones and kernels . Sunflower seeds and beet pulp, which are widely used in agriculture, were also removed from the list.
